L02-RI: Yes

Rationale

Cisco disclosure 1270, submitted on 23 February 2010, promises non-assertion of its controlled patents for compliant implementations when the disclosed RPL technology is included in an IETF-adopted standard. RFC 6550 is the adopted successor of draft-ietf-roll-rpl. This is an attributable patent-specific commitment, not an inference from open copyright terms or IETF participation. Credit the declared policy for the covered RPL technology within this IPv6 IoT composition.

Assessment method

Documentary holder-policy and standard-lineage review; no legal clearance

Source context

Cisco IPR disclosure 1270 and adopted RPL RFC 6550; reviewed 2026-10-17

Outstanding qualification

The disclosure was posted at draft revision 06 and does not specify a revision limit; its express adoption clause binds the included technology. Do not infer coverage of unrelated later additions. Reciprocity permits defensive assertion, including past royalties, against a party asserting standard-essential claims against Cisco, affiliates or their standard implementations. Nonessential product portions are excluded. This is a holder-bounded policy finding, not clearance of all RPL holders, IPv6, 6LoWPAN, DTLS, hardware or dependencies. Patent validity, expiration and legal enforceability were not audited. No runtime or implementation-availability verdict changes.
